FAQ

WHAT IS GOLD LEAF?

Gold Leaf is generally an alloy of gold, silver and copper. Special alloy of platinum and palladium are possible. 24 carat gold is pure beaten gold (999,9 Fineness).

WHAT MEANS CARAT?

The designation carat is used to indicate the fine content of gold alloys. Gold Leaf is measured in carat, depending on the weight of the pure gold.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD LEAF AND IMITATION GOLD LEAF?

Gold leaf is an alloy of precious metals. The character of a gilding with genuine Gold Leaf is unmatched. Imitation Gold Leaf or Base Metal (Dutch Metal) is an alloy of copper and zinc. These metals are flashy and penetrative in shade and highly susceptible to oxidation.

WHICH GOLD LEAF IS USED FOR OUTDOOR GILDINGS?

We recommend Gold Leaf in 23.5 carat, 23.75 carat, 24 carat, Moongold and Palladium for the application in the exterior field.

WHEN DO I NEED TO COAT THE GILDING?

All carats from 6 till 21 and silver leaf must be protected against oxidation. Carats from 22 till 24 carat are stable against oxidation in the interior field and 23,5 till 24 carat are also stable in the exterior field and can stay without protective coating.
Gold Leaf is non-resistant to touch or scratch-resistant. Gilded articles of daily use, should be varnished.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOOSE OR TRANSFER/PATENT GOLD LEAF?

Gold Leaf Losse – The gold is placed loosely in a booklet and contains 25 leaves. Gold leaf in type loose cannot handled by hand, when working with loose leaf you must make use of different gilder tools (Gilders knife, gilders cushion and gilders tip).
Gold Leaf Transfer/Patent – Gold leaf is mechanically pressed onto a tissue paper and is available in booklets of 25 leaves. The tissue paper can easily handled by hand and also cut with scissors in desired dimensions. Holding one edge of the tissue, place the gold leaf on the size, rubbing gently with a finger, cotton wool or cloth. After that, the tissue paper can be removed like a transfer picture.

HOW MANY LEAVES ARE USED FOR ONE SQUAREMETER?

The standard size (80 x 80 mm) requires approx. 175 leaves per square meter. This is an approximate value, which is depending on the respective surface (smooth, structured, etc.) and processing accuracy.
